Tips for Traveling to JFK Airport

Friday, 6 November 2009 05:27 by Guillermo

JFK airport is easily the largest airport in New York City. Located in Queens only 15 minutes away from Manhattan, the airport serves one of the largest metropolitan cities in the world. JFK is one of the biggest airports in the world, serving thousands of tourists and business travelers every day.

There are many options to getting to JFK airport, but just as many questions to consider. Here are a few tips for traveling to JFK airport.

Getting there by car

JFK is right off the Belt/Southern State Parkway and the Van Wyck expressway. Google Maps is a great resource for finding your way. Simply type in your address and JFK airport, and you’ll get step-by-step directions. If you need an address for GPS or another mapping source, the address to use is Van Wyck and JFK Expressway, Jamaica, NY 11430. Keep in mind that driving the city can be a horrible labyrinth for the unseasoned, so only plan on driving to the airport if you are already familiar with the city. Even if you are, you might want to factor in some time to get lost.

There are a number of options to consider for JFK airport parking, including on-site and off-site. With an airport parking search engine, you can find available parking according to distance to the airport and price. v

Public Transit

Airtrain features a low cost public transit option that’s fairly time effective. For $7, you can travel from Manhattan to JFK in roughly an hour. Getting to Manhattan may require a transfer, however, which could add inconvenience depending on your luggage. It’s a good option, however, if you travel light with one suitcase and maybe a carry on. Since many flights will charge you by the bag, going light on the bags can keep your airport costs down too.

Taxi

Taxis are by far the easiest ways for getting to the airport, especially if you aren’t already familiar with the city. Catching one is as simple as waving one down in the street, although that can be easier said than done during busy times. You can’t prearrange for cabs in the city, but there are enough that it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Some cabs charge a $45 airport fee, in addition to the tolls and the tip. Although a taxi present the least hassles, it can take as long as an hour to make it through the city, depending on traffic, so budget your time wisely. It’s always a lot less stressful traveling through the city knowing you have plenty of time.

Private Shuttle

This is a good step between taking the Airtrain and a taxi, as it is quicker than the train but cheaper than a taxi. You can opt for the Super Shuttle, the Airlink Shuttle, or the New York Airport Service Express Bus for $15 to $20 per person. Although getting from the airport doesn’t take a reservation, you will need a reservation to get to the airport. The shuttle can be arranged to pick you up directly from your hotel.

Car Service

Hiring a professional car costs more than the shuttle but is surprisingly cheaper than a cab. Though it takes some planning, it’s well worth it. Hiring a professional car service is by far the most comfortable way to get to the airport in the busy city. You need to prearrange and prepay for your pickup, but with costs ranging from $35 to $50, it can be cheaper than a taxi. You may of course still experience traffic delays, but the car will be far cleaner than a cab as well as more comfortable. You also get to enjoy door-to-door service, saving you the hassle of flagging down a cab while you’re hauling around your luggage.
