Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is known for many firsts in airport history. It began as a stopping point for U.S. Air Mail planes crossing from coast to coast in 1925 and it was the first in the country to be a municipal airport. As technology advancements were developed, Cleveland Hopkins Airport (CLE) was once again the first for many of them including the first radio-equipped air traffic control tower and the first airfield lighting system. Naturally Cleveland International became a draw for air and flight enthusiasts including Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, and eventually held National Air Races. Today, the airport has two parallel runways including one crosswind runway and offers more than 250 daily non-stop flights.
