Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is known for many firsts in airport history. It began as a stopping point for U.S. Air Mail planes crossing from coast to coast in 1925 and it was the first in the country to be a municipal airport. As technology advancements were developed, Cleveland Hopkins Airport (CLE) was once again the first for many of them including the first radio-equipped air traffic control tower and the first airfield lighting system. Naturally Cleveland International became a draw for air and flight enthusiasts including Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, and eventually held National Air Races.
