Detroit Metropolitan Airport started life in 1929 as Wayne County Airport. The Wayne County Airport served the Michigan Air National Guard and American Airlines became the first airline to shift all of its' commercial carriers to the new airport. By 1958, the Wayne County Airport changed to what it is known as today, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. As DTW grew in size, so did the funding, passengers, amenities, and services. In 2000, DTW hit a record breaking 35 million passengers and they expect passenger growth to rise about 60% by the year 2027.
